A solid slice of the sandwich (challah roll) craze.
On Murderers Row of Machane Yehuda (near Zalman’s, Hatch, Barabara and Jachnun Bar) sits a new dive and it is yum. It is called HALATI, which means my challah. This is a stepbrother of Bruno that makes sandwiches, but only three are on the menu: A Schnitzel on a small Challah roll, Assado on the same roll or Assado (pulled beef) on a croissant. This Challah sandwich is the latest craze in Israel.
Each sandwich is offered a small smattering of toppings ranging from Matbucha to diced lemon rinds and chimichurri and sauces, roasted garlic, eggplant and spicy chilis.
My wife had the Schnitzel and I had the croissant Assado. The schnitzel was delicious, fresh and seasoned well. I enjoyed it but it did not change my life. In fact, it did not seem wildly different than any other schnitzel sandwich I have enjoyed on a small challah rolls throughout the country. It was indeed fresher.
The croissant on the other hand, was unique and special. First of all, a pareve croissant is worthy of its own recognition. What gives a croissant its flaky and soft consistency is butter folded into the dough and baked perfectly. Margarine usually cannot replicate that distinction. But this croissant was as yum as most buttery ones I have enjoyed. The Assado I enjoyed had garlic confit, chimichurri, eggplant and a wickedly delicious and unique plum sauce that was sweet with real kick. I had not tasted anything like that sauce before and it made the sandwich even tastier.
This was a very messy eat. A minimum of 6 wet wipes was necessary, though the price tag was modest, and the fill factor was significant.
Try this sandwich spot for a messy and yummy meal that will fill your belly and leave your pockets full.
