I wish I were savvy enough to have this particular page play some amazing concerto each time you opened it up. That is what Marzipan Bakery deserves.
People who have never been to Israel know about Marzipan. In fact, I think this bakery is responsible for at least 1/5 of Israel’s Oleh population. That might be the unofficial catalyst of Nefesh beNefesh.
Marzipan is a bakery, though it has multiple locations in Jerusalem, and my favorite is on Rachel Immeinu street in the German Colony where Roni, the franchisee greets you with a smile and eagerness that is unparalleled. At this location, unlike at the flagship in the Shuk, you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, a delicious shakshuka or tasty sandwich and some of the best ice coffee around.
I will add that the Shakshuka breakfast that I recently enjoyed (7/21) was perhaps the most flavorful I have tasted in this country. A perfect blend of spices, garnished with mozzarella cheese and grilled eggplant was scrumptious. There was nothing left in the skillet with this yum breakfast food. It comes with Moroccan pita bread and Israeli salad and it promises to please! Try it!
The signature item here is of course the chocolate rugelach. You can get them to go, east some on your walk, or bring some home to the Diaspora. If you are traveling, consider the chocolate babka, which essentially is the same item, but made into a loaf and is less unwieldy than the box of rugelach and equally mouthwatering.
For other desserts you MUST try the Hot Chocolate Cake. It can only be purchased as an entire cake - but after one bite, that will NOT be a problem. The chocolate soufflé is exceptional. Some of the very best I have ever tasted.
